about

The first track of Black Jacket Rabbit's upcoming EP "Barricades".
Recorded by Tihema and Richard in a Grey Lynn bedroom, this song is 3 years in the making. First performed by Tihema and Richard when they were in the band "Haast Eagle", the track has since undergone major changes to the melody and lyrics. This is a song about battling depression, anxiety, mental illness and physical pain and coming out the other side a better person.

lyrics

Verses 1, 2 and 3:

At age 20 my life was make believe
As the world caught up to me
And all I could do
Was keep my mind free

But I can't win, and suddenly my life it caved in
And the world crumbled to my feet

Michael, Michael Michael now I understand
Why your hands were trembling
and why you had the urge to say

Michael, Michael, Michael
As I got out the car
Lines were reeling and so much changed that day

Chorus:

Now I say,
Oh, I've gone so blind
You take me to your barricade
You show me how to win again x2

Verses 3 and 4:

Now all I see is sympathy
And everyone acts the same as they did before
Hell i'm not even asking for empathy
But i would expect more

Of those of 15 years who all your life have spent such fears and now
You could cut the tension with a knife

And I'd expect more from those of 15 years who all your life you've Spent such fears but now you could cut the tension with a knife

Chorus x 2

Alternative chorus:

But I stand close to the edge,
I haven't got long
Mind tired
I don't even feel strong
But I hold on
Because I believe
